ATH (All-Time High)
TradingThe highest price a cryptocurrency has ever reached in its trading history.
ATL (All-Time Low)
TradingThe lowest price a cryptocurrency has ever reached in its trading history.
Bear Market
MarketsA market condition characterized by declining prices and pessimistic sentiment. Typically defined as a 20% or more decline from recent highs.
Bitcoin (BTC)
GeneralThe first and most valuable cryptocurrency, created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. It operates on a decentralized blockchain network.
Blockchain
TechnologyA distributed digital ledger that records all transactions across a network of computers. Each block contains transaction data and is cryptographically linked to the previous block.
Bull Market
MarketsA market condition characterized by rising prices and optimistic sentiment. Often defined as a 20% or more increase from recent lows.
Cold Wallet
SecurityA cryptocurrency wallet that is not connected to the internet, providing enhanced security against hacking. Examples include hardware wallets and paper wallets.
DeFi (Decentralized Finance)
DeFiFinancial services and applications built on blockchain networks that operate without traditional intermediaries like banks.
DEX (Decentralized Exchange)
DeFiA cryptocurrency exchange that operates without a central authority, allowing peer-to-peer trading directly from users' wallets.
DYOR (Do Your Own Research)
GeneralA common phrase in crypto encouraging investors to thoroughly research a project before investing, rather than relying on others' opinions.
Ethereum (ETH)
GeneralThe second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Ethereum is a blockchain platform that enables smart contracts and decentralized applications.
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
PsychologyThe anxiety or fear of missing a potentially profitable investment opportunity, often leading to impulsive buying decisions.
FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt)
PsychologyNegative information or sentiment spread to create fear and doubt about a cryptocurrency or the market in general.
Gas
TechnologyThe fee required to execute transactions or smart contracts on the Ethereum network. Gas prices vary based on network congestion.
HODL
TradingOriginated from a misspelling of "hold," now means "Hold On for Dear Life." Refers to the strategy of holding cryptocurrency long-term despite market volatility.
Hot Wallet
SecurityA cryptocurrency wallet connected to the internet, offering convenience for frequent trading but with higher security risks than cold wallets.
Layer 1 (L1)
TechnologyThe base blockchain network (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana) that processes and finalizes transactions on its own chain.
Layer 2 (L2)
TechnologySecondary frameworks built on top of Layer 1 blockchains to improve scalability and reduce transaction costs (e.g., Lightning Network, Arbitrum).
Liquidity
TradingThe ease with which a cryptocurrency can be bought or sold without significantly affecting its price. Higher liquidity means more trading activity.
Market Cap
MarketsThe total value of a cryptocurrency, calculated by multiplying the current price by the circulating supply. Market Cap = Price × Supply.
Mining
TechnologyThe process of using computational power to validate transactions and add new blocks to a blockchain, earning cryptocurrency rewards.
NFT (Non-Fungible Token)
GeneralA unique digital asset on a blockchain representing ownership of items like art, music, or collectibles. Unlike cryptocurrencies, NFTs are not interchangeable.
Private Key
SecurityA secret cryptographic code that allows you to access and control your cryptocurrency. Never share your private key with anyone.
Proof of Stake (PoS)
TechnologyA consensus mechanism where validators are chosen to create new blocks based on the amount of cryptocurrency they "stake" as collateral.
Proof of Work (PoW)
TechnologyA consensus mechanism requiring miners to solve complex mathematical puzzles to validate transactions and create new blocks.
Seed Phrase
SecurityA series of 12-24 words that serves as a backup for your cryptocurrency wallet. It can be used to recover access to your funds.
Smart Contract
TechnologySelf-executing code stored on a blockchain that automatically enforces the terms of an agreement when predetermined conditions are met.
Stablecoin
GeneralA cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to a reserve asset like the US dollar (e.g., USDT, USDC, DAI).
Staking
DeFiLocking up cryptocurrency to support blockchain operations (like validating transactions) in exchange for rewards.
Token
GeneralA digital asset created on an existing blockchain (like ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum), as opposed to coins that have their own blockchain.
TVL (Total Value Locked)
DeFiThe total value of cryptocurrency deposited in a DeFi protocol, used as a metric to measure the protocol's size and trust.
Wallet
SecuritySoftware or hardware that stores the private keys needed to access and manage your cryptocurrency holdings.
Whale
TradingAn individual or entity that holds a large amount of cryptocurrency, capable of influencing market prices through large trades.
Yield Farming
DeFiA DeFi strategy of moving cryptocurrency between different protocols to maximize returns through interest, fees, and token rewards.
